Rules regarding sanctions, other than termination of membership, which may be imposed on a member of the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland Limited against whom a complaint has been upheld, in accordance with the provisions of Article 18 of the Articles of Association of that Institute.


  1. In these Rules:-

    ‘the Institute’ means the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland, Limited;

    ‘the Board’ means the board of directors of the Institute;

    ‘member’ means a member of the Institute of any class of membership established under the Articles of Association of the Institute and ‘membership’ shall be construed accordingly.

  2. Where, pursuant to the provisions of Article 18 of the Articles of Association of the Institute, the Board upholds a complaint against a member that he, she or it is guilty of or has been involved in stated misbehaviour (which term shall include but not be limited to breach of the Code of Practice and any guidelines on professional practice for the time being in force pursuant to the provisions of Article 48 of the Articles of Association of the Institute) and the Board decides, pursuant to paragraph (d) of Article 18 of the Articles of Association of the Institute, to impose a sanction on such member other than termination of membership, such sanction may be as follows:

    1. a reprimand given to the member against whom the complaint has been upheld, which reprimand may be given in writing or otherwise and publicly or otherwise, in accordance with the decision of the Board at the time such sanction is imposed; or

    2. suspension for a single, fixed period (specified by the Board in writing at the time the sanction is imposed) from any or all the rights or privileges of membership of the Institute, the nature and extent of such suspension being specified by the Board in writing at the time the sanction is imposed; or

    3. a fine of such amount and payable over such period as the Board considers appropriate, which amount and period shall be specified by the Board in writing at the time the sanction is imposed; or

    4. payment to the extent determined by the Board of any, or part of any, costs incurred by the Institute or the Board in investigating, considering and ruling on the complaint, such extent and the period within which the sum so arising shall be paid being specified by the Board in writing at the time the sanction is imposed; or

    5. a combination of any or all of the preceding, such combination being specified by the Board in writing at the time the sanction is imposed.


  3. Where: pursuant to Rule 2 of these Rules a member of the Institute is made subject to a sanction comprising or including suspension from the rights or privileges of membership or payment of a fine or payment of costs incurred by the Institute or the Board in investigating, considering and ruling on the complaint, the Board may subsequently, at its discretion, remit such sanction.
